It’s time to take steps towards taking care of ourselves. Are you like me? Are you guilty of taking care of everyone else and not putting yourself on the priority list? After many failed attempts to redirect some of my energy to myself, I think I’ve finally landed on the solution - baby steps.
HEY PARENTS OF 8TH GRADERS! Graduating from the 8th grade is an amazing milestone for teens. I love photographing 8th graders because they have one foot in childhood and one foot adulthood. They are simultaneously children, teens and 30-year olds! Truth be told, it's a tricky age for parents, because their kids can look so grown up in pictures, and that can be hard to handle (especially for dads and daughters!). I specialize in age-appropriate posing, hair and makeup for the girls, and a fun experience for all.
Tweens and teen girls are complex creatures. With one foot in childhood and one foot reaching towards adulthood, they can be changeable, childish, mature, and confused all within the space of a minute.
So what to get for your teen or tween that isn’t made by Apple or Samsung? What will satisfy this complicated girl?
Show your daughter or granddaughter or niece that she is beautiful and give her the experience of a lifetime. With a teen-focused beauty shoot at Simpson Portraits, your girl gets to be a model for the day with age-appropriate makeup, hair styling, guided posing, a 2-hour photo shoot with mutliple outfits, and photographs custom designed for her personality.
Looking at a photograph of yourself and feeling beautiful is powerful stuff. I say this for women of all ages, but particularly for teens, who are just starting to figure out who they are.
The Subtle Messages We Give that Crush Self-Esteem
I feel so strongly about empowering young women to feel confident and beautiful. Studies show that parents stop hiring professional photographers to photograph their families when the kids are between 11-17. They say, “Oh, we’ll wait until you get your braces off,” or “she’s in her awkward stage, we’ll wait for her senior portraits.” The message subtly given is that these girls aren’t pretty enough to be photographed.
Ages 11-17 are the Most Important for Photographing Girls
But this is the MOST important time for a girl to be photographed. It’s precisely between the ages of 11-17 that things go so horribly wrong for girls in terms of self esteem, body image, and confidence.
I am rolling out a program in January that will help teen girls feel confident and beautiful so they can make great choices for themselves in their lives. Stay tuned for details.

Thank you, Tim Gunn for shining a light on the belittling gap in the fashion industry. Making a lot of money and making women all over the world feel beautiful isn’t enough for most fashion designers. They would rather design for the few women who are sized 2 than the 72% of us who wear a size 12 and above. And what is up with retailers not wanting our business?
I never use the term, “plus size,” either to describe myself or my clients. I am a woman and I wear clothes and I want beautiful clothes that make me feel confident. This is not too much to ask. I have money to spend, but few options to purchase. Happily, some people are waking up to our under-served market and looking at opportunities. Thank you Melissa McCarthey for jumping into this market. Who is next?
When I was a kid, my mom shopped at a New York boutique called, The Forgotten Woman. It’s a perfect, but depressing name. Unseen, forgotten, ignored, invisible. This is how many of us feel. I say to hell with that!

Bridal Couture Portraits just got a whole lot Spooker!
I always thought it was a shame to trash a beautiful wedding gown for a Trash the Dress photoshoot, so here's a fun alternative - a Halloween ghostly beauty shoot that keeps your wedding dress intact.
We did hair and makeup here in the studio with the awesome Julie Buck and Maggie Cathey. Our model was Hannah Sulak and the flowers were provided by Los Angeles Floral Couture by Glendora Florist.
The theme was Ghost Bride. I wanted something ethereal and beautiful, but still spooky, so we looked to Disney's Haunted Mansion for inspiration. It looks challenging, but the fun part of this shoot was posing the model, then we had two dress assistants to FLING the tulle into the air.
What would you like to do for your own spooky shoot? Email us if you would like a ghostly bride shoot for yourself and we will design it just for you.
In the spirit of All Hallow’s Eve, we are offering highly-styled spooky portrait sessions during the month of October! Inspired by the creepy beauty of Disney’s Haunted Mansion, we wanted to create a ghostly style that can be fun for all ages. Come with your ideas and we will design a custom shoot just for you, including hair and makeup....

Calling all New Yorkers! I'm heading to NYC in April and will be doing exclusive in studio portrait sessions while I'm there. I specialize in fine art children's photography, beauty, and business headshots. If you know someone who might be interested in a session, would you please pass the info along?
I'm thrilled over our new style of Fine Art children's photography! I used to photograph children in the park where they ran around playing and I tried to capture a moment and pray it was in focus. But the images didn't satisfy me or make me think about fine art. I wanted to create a style of fine art children's photography that begged to be framed and would be cherished in my clients' homes.
There's something about a still and quiet portrait of a child. Their personality still comes through, but the stillness gives us a moment to think about them and their character and future. These make me so happy.
When I photograph children, I try to keep our sessions to around an hour, even if it is a family of 3. I don't want to overtax young children, or make mom stressed out. For older children, we can do a couple outfit changes and change up the photography style, but for younger children, I like to keep it simple.
Time is fleeting and our littles won't be so little for long. You'll see my own children in these collages. I was just looking at a print of my daughter on our dining room wall this morning and marveling at how she's changed since she was 5. In that moment, I was filled with the love. That's what this is about. It's all about the love.
We strive to create the most beautiful photographs you've ever seen of yourself. Couture Bridal Portraits supplement what you will be doing with your photojournalist photographer at your wedding. We are taking bridal portraits to the next level. Fantasy portraits, magazine-style couture fashion spreads in your wedding gown, and custom studio beauty portraits are something totally new for brides in Los Angeles.
At first glance, florist and portrait photographer does not seem like a natural pairing, but it really works. What began as a mutual love of haute couture, fashion magazines, and high end products ended up in the creation of our own high fashion ad campaigns that promote both custom photography and custom flower design.
